In 2018 I had the opportunity to travel to Myanmar with a photography group to explore the various aspects of this  Southeast  Asian country’s rich history. I was in turmoil given the well documented evidence of human rights violations being committed by various political and military factions in this country. However, after giving it some thought I decided to go for the sole purpose of documenting the lives of everyday people throughout the country.

This series of images offers a window into the complex tapestry of Myanmar, a nation rich in culture, history, and resilience.

Myanmar’s history is interwoven with periods of political turmoil. The rise of the military junta in the mid-20th century cast a long shadow over the country.

One name that stands out in the fight for democracy is Aung San Suu Kyi. Once a beacon of hope for change in the country, she was detained and imprisoned in 2021 after multiple charges were brought against her by the military junta who staged a coup.

She continues to remain under house arrest to this day.  This has raised many concerns about the future of the democratic process and progress in Myanmar.

Myanmar’s ethnic makeup adds another layer of complexity to the political landscape. While the Burman population holds a privileged position, ethnic groups like the Shan, Karin, and Kachin have long sought greater autonomy. Their stories are often untold, yet their cultures and traditions significantly contribute to the richness of the nation.
